He enlisted in the navy in June of 1943, and served 23 months in the North Atlantic on the Levis Frigate as well as the Bittersweet Corvette that escorted the Maritime Convoys in Europe. He transferred from the Dalhousie NB Legion to the Baie Comeau Legion and was an executive committee member in the 60’s and 70’s. He worked hard as a Legionnaire and was always on deck when it came to Poppy Season. On Sunday, October 25th 2020, he became the first member of the Baie Comeau North Shore Legion to reach the 75 years of service mark. In 2011 he received the Lieutenant Governor Senior Medal in recognition of his support for the Mission of the Legion.

While spending a couple of summers in Dalhousie, NB with my Grandmother, Uncle Johnny always came down to spend a week or 2 with his mom and visit his friends. He enjoyed helping her out and running errands for her. He would take her for drives in his truck. He (and my grandmother) loved seafood and we often took trips out to Charlo to pick up fresh lobster. I loved it when he came down, because we had the most amazing seafood feasts. We would meet up each summer when travelling home. We always stopped in Baie Comeau to visit him. He was more like a friend to me than an uncle. He would talk about anything and everything. He was a down to earth man and loved life. Missing you. RIP Uncle Johnny.

I have fond memories of uncle Johnny. Visiting him on our roadtrips to the north shore every summer was a yearly tradition. We would sit for hours at coffee shops and chat. He would show us his hockey card and hockey jersey collection he kept behind lock and key. He was proud to show us his newest addition to his collection. He always made time for us and was happy to see the gang. I will miss you very much uncle Johnny. You had the best smile. Love you, RIP
