1930 - 2022
Piedad MerinoRitual recording
Piedad (Pilar) Merino passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of the first day of 2022 at the age of 91. Heaven has another angel now. If you ever met Piedad you would understand why. She was proud, determined, kind, and beautiful inside and out. Talkative and always making new friends, she was never shy to speak her mind but always did so with kind words. After a long and healthy life, she succumbed to her age as she weakened over the last few months.
Born in 1930 in northern Spain, the was second oldest of seven children. She was used to taking care of others and like many of her generation, took pride in hard work. She was proud of many things, including her children whom she adored. Those who knew her well also knew that she was young at heart and loved to laugh, but that deep down she was a very serious person about life and about what is really important.
Piedad is survived by her daughter Begonia Sánchez Lojk (Robert Lojk), her four grandchildren David and Ryan (from Ottawa), Michael and Daniel (from Montreal), and three grandchildren (Max, Romeo and Leo). She is pre-deceased by her husband (Luis Sánchez), her son José Luis (Catherine) and her infant son Claudio (1958).
She had a special bond with her youngest sister, Consuelo, and her three children Luis, Raúl and especially Connie whom she raised as an toddler. She also leaves behind three sisters and one brother, and other extended family in Spain. She was very close to her late husband’s family, especially Carmen and Isabel Sánchez Palacios (Spain) whom she spoke with regularly. Friends Eusebio Noval and Eduarda Furtado and their children (Frank and Ruben) were family in every sense of the word. They provided her company and comfort through the years.
Piedad held on life until 2022, perhaps so that we can remember her as we enter every new year from now on.
The family wishes to thank the personnel of the Hôpital Notre Dame and the Centre d’Hébergement Ernest Routhier in Montréal. They were all very kind and professional and will forever be in our gratitude.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in the name of Piedad Merino to the Fondation Santé Urbaine fondationsanteurbaine.com or any children’s charity of your choice, would be appreciated.
