Thuy Bui (nee Vu)
Ritual recording

Thuy Bui (née Vu) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She will be deeply missed, especially by her husband of 52 years Tien Dai.

Thuy was born in Hanoi, Vietnam as the youngest child of a large family. She and her family then moved to Saigon in 1955. After graduation from high school, she came to Canada in September 1965 as a Colombo Plan Scholar to study at the University of Ottawa, where she met her future husband Dai, himself a young student far from home. He was immediately charmed by her intelligence and wit. They married in 1969, the year she graduated with a Bachelor degree in Honours Chemistry. Her Honours thesis was guided by Prof. Keith Laidler, a pioneer in Chemical Kinetics.

Thuy and her husband moved to Toronto in 1969, where she completed her Master’s degree in Physical Chemistry at York University. After her husband accepted a position at McGill University, they moved to Montreal in 1971 where she enrolled in the PhD program of Chemistry at the Université de Montreal for two years. With a young growing family she decided to accept a teaching position at Vanier College. She was a beloved Chemistry teacher for thirty-four years and finished her career at Dawson College. Many of her students still remember her as their caring teacher of Organic and Physical Chemistry. Over the years she would be approached in all different kinds of places by former students, since accomplished in a variety of fields from journalism to medicine, who made sure to share their appreciation of their time with her.

Above all, Thuy cherished most her family and dear friends. She will be dearly missed by her sons Don (Thanh-Mai) and Dan, her daughter Helen (Roupen), and her four loving grandchildren Dat, Dao, Teddy and Emmy, who visited her almost every day. But most of all, she will be worshipped by her husband for the rest of his life. Extended family members near and far also share in their grief. As they were just settling as a young family in Montreal, Thuy and Dai had opened their home to nieces and nephews making their way in a new country and sponsored family members from overseas, helping them start a new life in Canada. Thuy cared for them all with love and compassion.

Thuy enjoyed her daily sudoku and crossword with her morning coffee, keeping in touch with dear friends by phone, email, and over lunch, tending to her many plants and garden flowers, and many worldwide travels with her family. At home she lovingly cooked delicious meals and delivered them carefully packaged to her children, now grown but settled just minutes away with their own young families. She could be seen running errands around TMR with her youngest son Dan by her side, catching up with shopkeepers and friends on the way, while picking up treats for the grandkids. Thuy genuinely delighted in all the achievements, big and small, of her kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews and their own kids. She had an amazing memory and could recall the finest details of her loved ones’ lives from decades past. She accepted people as they were and did not try to change them. Her love, generosity and kindness were a balm to all who were lucky enough to be in her life.

A private visitation will be held Sunday, July 11 with interment on Tuesday, July 13, 2021. The family would love to hear from family and friends via messages at urgelbourgie.com. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Vanguard Foundation at https://www.vanguardquebec.qc.ca/foundation-en/in-memoriam-donation in Thuy’s honour, a school that provides services to special needs children such as those with autism, a cause dear to her heart.
