Duncan Buie

Duncan Gandier Buie, 65, passed away peacefully at home on a bright sunny winter day, February 26,2018.

Duncan was born in Beardmore on October 24, 1952, and at an early age moved to Atikokan with parents Bernice “Bernie” Buie and Douglas Buie along with older siblings Randy, Bruce and Ruby. Surrounded by nature and a loving family he was able to cultivate happy moments that he carried with himself for all his life.

In his teens, Atikokan started to feel too small for Duncan, who ultimately decided to go conquer the world at the age of 19. He first went on a backpack trip to Europe, which lasted a couple of months, then, after a quick return to Canada due to his father’s passing, he spread his wings once again, this time, to South America. He always talked with great joy about his adventures in Peru, Chile and Argentina, among other countries; however, Brazil was the country that stole his heart.

While spending time in Rio de Janeiro, Duncan fell in love with Angela, who came to be his first wife and with whom he had three children: Mariana, Miguel and Julia.

From the union with his second wife, Rogeria, were born Gabriel, Amanda and a great partnership. They founded a very successful language school that carried his name. More than a thousand students passed by the school, many of whom were drawn especially due to Duncan’s popularity. His unique personality and natural ability to teach attracted so many people that a waiting list was created. Always loved by his students, co-workers and friends, Duncan became a legend in Niteroi-RJ.

Later in his life, Duncan married Andrea, his soulmate, best friend and the one who brought joy to his life until the very end. They returned to Canada in 2011, where Duncan was able to relive his childhood memories and spend more time with his siblings.

It is impossible to define Duncan with only one word, but in an attempt to do so, the word “unique” comes to mind. A unique personality, unique teacher, unique person. He lived his life to the fullest, and the ones he encountered in this process were marked forever.

Life without him seems empty and dull, as he was the one that filled our lives with colours. But, Duncan was born to be free, and now he has spread his wings once again for one last trip.

“Eternamente serei seu Filho e pra todo sempre serás meu Pai!”

Dad, You went ... it was on a trip that would have to be only yours. Without companion. Close a cycle with exact 65 years of life. Living has always been one of your pleasures, but at age 66, you would not live, and, in fact, grow old and this You never admitted. Is not true ? Tomorrow will be our last "meeting". I will never see you again, but I will never again feel you in each; street in which to walk, music to hear ... everything will be grey from now on, because many colors You took, they are the reflection of your essence why You colored our lives. Everything will be different, especially the family celebrations because the reason is gone ... It will be difficult, but let's do, for You, Dad. You will ALWAYS ALIVE within our hearts and eternally present in the richest memories of a GREAT MAN, who at no time corrupted himself, on the contrary forged us and taught us wonderful things. Values, principles and character of a man who was, and, ALWAYS will be an example of being human. Thank you for everything, my hero !!! Eternally I will be your Son and forever you will be my Father! Go in peace, Master ... I love you.

My Teacher, obrigado por tudo! Foi muito divertido ser seu aluno. E gratidão por acolher minha mãe na sua escola, como professora de Alemão. Ela foi muito feliz trabalhando com você e Andrea. Perdemos um grande camarada. See you later, alligator.

I met Duncan as my English teacher 12 years ago and we you became friends since then. We had been talking online every week since he and Andrea moved to Montreal. Those moments were much more than just English class. Rest in peace, my friend. Jorge, Gloria and Paula

I'll always remember Duncan as someone who love to meet new people and whom everyone liked and admired. Duncan always thought the best of people. This rare ethical and moral value, He sought to convey to his sons and daughters. I will always remember his moral stature, but also his modesty and lack of ambition, perhaps a little too much. Rest in peace Duncan, you will always will have a special place in my heart.

We met in 1976 when Duncan had already joined the English School in which we became co-workers for at least 10 years. At this point, Duncan had already made plans to start his own English course. After some time, when he decided to go back to his hometown, Duncan called me to say goodbye and offered me to buy his course. Since I had other plans, I turned down his offer. So sorry to hear about his passing. But being as unique as he'd always been, it's not surprising that he decided to spread his wings towards eternity. Rest in peace my friend. Soon we'll meet again.
