Leroy Vernon Mason
"Leroy Mason passed away peacefully at the MGH on January 10th, 2016 in the company of his daughter. Leroy was 91, born in Buffalo NY on December 31st, 1924. Moved to Montreal in the 1940’s and the last of a large family of 13 siblings.
He is survived by his daughter Sheila, his son Daniel and three adoring grandchildren Quinn, Noah and William. Leroy was a proud veteran of World War 11 and served overseas for two years in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged and went on to pursue his real passion in life, his love of Jazz music. Leroy was a decorated musician and kept company with some of the greatest North American Jazz musicians to grace the early Jazz scene. Leroy was an accomplished percussionist, keyboard player, flutist, with the Saxophone being his first true love. He was showcased on Broadway, Rockhead’s Paradise, Biddle’s, now House of Jazz and was a key member of the Montreal Jazz Festival. Leroy had a passion for cars, especially minivans. He loved basketball and his favourite team was the Los Angeles Lakers. His love for good eating (chitterlings, oxtail and pig feet) surpassed all things. He loved spending time with his family. He was an avid church goer, part of the Men’s Gospel Choir at the Union United Church and a kind hearted person who treated everyone he met with respect and compassion. Leroy has left a great legacy for his remaining family and was a role model for all men.
You will be missed Peepa!!! Love Skip, Peggy, Quinn, Sheila, Michel, Noah and William."
