Leszek (Leslie) Chelminski
Passed away Friday, February 2, 2007 while enjoying the sun on holiday in Florida.
Beloved husband of Krystyna. Devoted father of Andy (Cindy Norman) and Lillian ( Jack Armstrong). Cherished grandfather of Derek and Teri and Cindy's children Leslie and Jordanna. He will also be sadly missed by his two nieces Basia in London, England and Basia in Warsaw, Poland.
Leslie was born in Poland in 1915.During the Second World War he joined the Polish Air Force, later transferred to the French Air Force and then to the British Air Force. He was declared Honorable Major of the Polish Air Force.
He came to Canada in 1948 and went to work as an engineer with Canadair in Montreal, working on CF-86 Sabre fighters.
From 1950 he was chief engineer and in 1967 manager of the Department, till 1975, when he retired.
He became assistant competition director-cycling during the XX1 Olympic Games of Montreal. After the Olympics, he chose to donate his time and skills to CESO for a number of years, he provided consultation and advice to numerous companies and agencies worldwide.
He became involved in car rallying in the early 1950s and by 1956 he and Les Stanley had won their first Quebec Championship. He went on to win 2 more Quebec Championship and was twice Canadian Champion.
Leslie was also a life long athlete with a love for skiing, swimming, sailing and wind surfing. He had a passion for adventure and traveling.
He was president and vice-preisdent of the Polish Air Force in Canada (1965-66 and l988-92), vice-president of the Polish Engineers and Technicians (1965-67), President of the Polish-Canadian Congress (1974-76 and 1998-2000), secretary (1968-74) and vice president (1975-78) of the Polish War Veterans Association and president of the Canadian Automobile Sport Coub (1958-62).
The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 10 at 12:00 p.m.(noon) at St. Michael's and St. Anthony's Church, 5580 Saint Urbain Street, Montreal.
