Noelise Monderoy

Noelise Monderoy Lee Poy
(December 24, 1933-July 20, 2024)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Noelise Francesca Lee Poy (née Monderoy). She died peacefully at home in Montreal. She is survived by her five children (Petrina, Mark, Michael, Paula, and Perryne); eight grandchildren (Matthias, Sage, Hannah, Xavier, Xica, Maya, Maximillian, and Mason); and three sons-in-law (John, Joseph, and Hozefa). She was the eldest sister to the late Monica and survived by Monica’s four children (Francis, Vanessa, Nicki, and Jamie); Steve (children – the late Melissa, Stacey-Ann, and Dale); and Peter (children – Steisha, Simone, and Maurice).

Noelise is also survived by her pumpkin vine family — relatives, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. They have encircled her with love and care through the years, especially her cousins the Baptiste’s, Clarke’s, and Boxill’s; and her dear friends who are too many to name here.

Noelise was born in Rio Claro, Trinidad to Olive Samuel and Lody Monderoy (Mondo). In her early and formative years, she was raised in the family “old house” by her grandmother, Euphemia Boxill. There she developed strong bonds with her mother’s siblings (Dan, Claris, Doris, Veronica, Hugh, and Nora). They were the family that supported her and who she cared for throughout her life. In return, that deep care from family, friends, and caregivers buoyed her when she needed it most.

Noelise spoke of the hardships of growing up in the country without much means, yet she spoke more often of the joys of her childhood, with lifelong friends, neighbors…and Carnival. Noelise loved her Carnival! As a young adult, often stealing away from Rio Claro to Port of Spain for an annual “teachers conference” so she could listen to steel pan, calypso, jump up and play mas. At that time of year, the Queens Park Savannah was her happy place.

By Ash Wednesday she was back in Rio Claro. A devout Catholic, Noelise met her husband Peter Matthias (Winon) Lee Poy in church. He was the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) treasurer, and she was the secretary. After church, Peter would gift her one of her favourite foods, avocados, in a paper bag and jet off on his Triumph motorcycle.

Noelise was a skilled cook and baker. In fact, one of her first jobs while in university was in a bakery. She loved making her Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts, including planning for her black cake and ginger beer making months in advance. Her favourite food stomping grounds were St. Lawrence Blvd and Atwater Market, where she knew many of the vendors by name.

Noelise’s career began in a one-room schoolhouse in Ortoire, Trinidad, where there is a commemorative plaque in her honor. In 1959, she emigrated to Canada to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Sir George Williams (now Concordia). Peter followed shortly thereafter and they were wed in December 1960.

In Montréal, Noelise became a teacher first at Leroux School, then at Laurendeau Dunton School in the early 1970s and remained there until she retired in 1993. Noelise would often meet the children she taught and their families throughout Montréal — even during her hospital stays. They always greeted her with delight and fond remembrances. An educator, but also an avid learner, Noelise received her master’s degree from McGill in Family Counseling Psychology in 1998.

Noelise was a devout member of St. John Brébeuf. In addition to teaching, she served as the catechism liaison guiding the children through the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation, including at Madre Dei Cristiani. She was very active in the Legion of Mary, and when she was no longer able to attend meetings, group members came to her home to pray with her.

Peter and Noelise bought their first home on Bishop Power in the 1960s. In true country style, the property shared a gate with Aunty Vero’s home on 11th Avenue, where they had been staying. Trips along I-87 to Willoughy Ave, Brooklyn to visit Aunty Claris, Aunty Nora, and Uncle Willie was another well-trodden path for the Lee Poy’s. Family was incredibly important to Noelise, and throughout the decades, these homes provided a welcoming open door and landing place for many family members.

Noelise loved LaSalle and walked and biked the paths along its many waterways. The other place she loved was Valley View in Maracas, St. Joseph. It was where she and Peter were planning their retirement years, right before his passing in 1993. The abundance of flora, fauna, and mountain views were a joy to Noelise’s nature-loving senses, especially those hummingbirds! So much so that it was her dying wish to return home and be buried next to Peter in Maracas.

As a final note, we would like to extend an extra special thank you to Antoinette and Pearl who cared for Noelise on a daily basis with unsurpassable love and devotion.
