Starting out at Marine Industrie de Sorel, he joined forces with three colleagues to acquire Chantiers Davie de Lauzon in 1976. After selling the shipyard to Dome Petroleum of Calgary in 1981, Marcel continued to manage the company as President until his retirement in August 1984.

He then went on to manage a financial management company, Gestion M&A Lafrance Inc. As a mentor, he spent 15 years as a volunteer, notably with the Fondation de l'Entrepreneurship du Québec. For many years, he sat on a number of boards of directors, including Gestion FÉRIQUE. In February 2002, he published a book entitled Mentors Wanted.
