It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Claude Béïque Nadeau, at the venerable age of 99 years and 6 months, on the 8th of October, 2023, in Montreal.

Born on April 2nd, 1924, in Magog, she was the daughter of Alexandre Béïque and Éliane Hébert, and sister to the late Madeleine Lapointe and the late René Béïque.

She will be fondly remembered by her children Nicole, Pierre, Danielle (Dave), André, by her grand children Geneviève (Stéphane) and Simon Pepin, Christopher (Camille), Mattie and Stirling McMillan, and great grand children Eve and Jacob Pepin, and was preceded in death by her son Louis (1956-2001) and her husband, Dr. Jean Nadeau (1917-2005). She will be missed by her sister-in-law Gisèle Leblanc, numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, former colleagues, and friends.
The family will be receiving condolences at the Urgel Bourgie Funeral Home (1255 Ave Beaumont, Town of Mount Royal) on Thursday November 9th 2023 from 1pm to 5pm and from 6.30pm to 9pm. A funeral service at the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal (110 Notre-Dame West, Montreal, Quebec) will follow on Friday November 10th 2023 at 2:30pm.

Graduating in 1929 from the Dental Faculty of Universite de Montreal, she became only the third woman in the history of the province of Quebec to become a dentist. Married on June 3rd, 1950, to fellow dentist Jean Nadeau, they had five children: Nicole, Pierre, Danielle (Dave), André and the late Louis, five grandchildren; Geneviève (Stéphane) and Simon Pepin, Christopher (Camille), Mattie and Stirling McMillan, and two great grandchildren; Eve and Jacob Pepin.

Dr. Béïque-Nadeau worked at the faculty of dentistry of the Universite de Montreal for over thirty years. She was the first woman named director of the Department of Stomatology. She also engaged her energy in the newly formed Teacher’s Union of the University as union delegate, then vice-president of the body and eventually was appointed to the ‘’Conseil de l’Université’’. Upon her retirement, she received the title of Honorary Professor of the Department of Stomatology of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Montreal University.
She devotedly encouraged and accompanied her children in the practice of their favoured sport, figure skating, and later on, luge as per the interest of her daughter Danielle for the sport. Her implication in luge lead her to attain the rank of International judge and to be invited to participate in the Winter Olympic games of Calgary in 1988, as an official.

She was also an accomplished pianist and later on, became a talented painter. In the 1980’s, Claude and her husband Jean received their licence as Ham Radio operators and participated in many ‘’field days’’ as members of the Union Métropolitaine des Sans Filistes, known by her call letters VE2 GCN. On June 3rd, 2000, they celebrated their 50th anniversary.

After moving Downtown Montreal in 2002, they applied themselves to learn Mandarin. Whether in Montreal, at the cottage in Lac Simon or in Florida, her thoughts and prayers were always for her family and her friend’s happiness and well-being.

Her generosity and gentleness, and her tenderness towards all who have known her, and her love for her family have marked their lives forever and her smile will remain an everlasting memory.
