Salvatore Francesco Calabretta
The family will welcome you on Saturday, October 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Urgel Bourgie / Athos funeral complex located at 1275 Dollard Avenue, in Lasalle.
Son of the late Maria Rosa Scopacasa and the late Vito Calabretta, Salvatore was born in Simbario (Italy) on February 20, 1930, and died in the palliative care unit of the Champlain Accommodation Center in Verdun on September 8, 2023, at the age of 93.
He is survived by his wife Anne-Marie Beaulieu, his children Vito (Tamara Zimmerman), Catherine (Neji Jedda; ex-sp. Roberto Depani), Marie-France (Paolo Orsi), his grandchildren Evelina, Alessandro, Isabella, Amélie, Joshua, Noah and Elyssa, his sisters Caterina Monardo and Franca Liotine (Giovanni), his brother Vincenzo (Graziella), his nephews and nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
At 16, Salvatore left his village in Calabria for France. He worked in a coal mine in Faulquemont in 1946, then at the Wendel factories in Hayange, where he contributed to the hiring of hundreds of other Italians from his village and all over Calabria. He joined the French Foreign Legion in 1949, completed his military training in Sidi Bel Abbès (Algeria) and left for the Indochina War in Saigon. He rose to the rank of sergeant, suffered a shoulder wound and left the army in 1955 following a hospital stay in Hyères. Peugeot then hired him, housing him in Montbéliard (Sochaux). He subsequently learned the trade of plasterer-mason and took part in the construction of buildings during the Var region’s economic boom in the late 1950s.
Francis arrived in Canada in 1959 and continued to develop his entrepreneurial spirit. He worked in a variety of jobs (restaurant manager, taxi driver, etc.) while starting a family in Montreal. In the early 1970s, he contributed to the founding of the Pointe-Saint-Charles community clinic and to the birth of CLSCs in Quebec. He later acquired, renovated and managed, rental properties in Verdun until his retirement. He spent the last 16 years of his life straddling two continents, six months of the year in Simbario, Calabria, six months in Montreal. The nature of the Serre mountains in Calabria and his Gargia garden brought him pleasure, peace and happiness as did the company of his family and many wonderful cousins.
In accordance with the wishes of the deceased, his ashes will be scattered on the land of his ancestors, Gargia, during a gathering in the summer of 2024.

A 16 anni Salvatore lascia il suo paese della Calabria per recarsi in Francia. Lavora in una miniera di carbone a Faulquemont nel 1946, poi negli stabilimenti Wendel di Hayange dove fa assumere centinaia di Italiani originari del suo villaggio e della Calabria. In seguito, si arruola nella Legione Straniera francese nel 1949, completa la sua formazione militare a Sidi Bel Abbès (in Algeria) e parte per la guerra d'Indocina a Saigon. Rimane 32 mesi in Vietnam e i tre anni successivi in Algeria dove, divenuto sergente, lascia l'esercito nel 1955. Peugeot lo assume e lo accoglie a Montbéliard (Sochaux). Dopo il ricovero ospedaliero a Hyères per una ferita di guerra, apprende il mestiere di stuccatore e partecipa alla costruzione di edifici all'epoca dello sviluppo economico del Var.
Salvatore arriva in Canada nel 1959 e continua a sviluppare il suo spirito imprenditoriale. Svolge diversi lavori (ristoratore, tassista, ecc.) mentre mette su famiglia a Montreal. All'inizio degli anni '70, contribuisce alla fondazione della clinica comunitaria di Pointe-Saint-Charles e alla nascita dei CLSC del Québec. Successivamente acquista, ristruttura e gestisce, uno dopo l'altro, i suoi immobili in affitto a Verdun, fino al suo pensionamento. Ha trascorso gli ultimi 16 anni della sua vita a cavallo tra i due continenti, sei mesi all'anno a Simbario in Calabria, sei mesi a Montreal. La natura delle Serre Calabre, il suo giardino a Gargia e la compagnia della sua famiglia, dei suoi meravigliosi cugini e degli amici gli hanno procurato piacere, pace e felicità.
La famiglia vi accoglierà sabato 7 ottobre dalle 14 alle 17 presso il complesso funebre Urgel Bourgie / Athos situato in 1275 Dollard Avenue, a Lasalle.
Le ceneri verranno disperse, secondo la volontà di Salvatore, nella terra dei suoi avi, a Gargia, nell'estate del 2024.
