Yvonne Layne
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Yvonne Joan Assanah on March 22, 2023, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Yvonne was born in Pomeroon, Guyana on August 21, 1945. She was the daughter of Stephen and Merissa Layne, and sister to Julius, Ula, and Cyril. Yvonne graduated from Technical Institute in Georgetown, Guyana and had an illustrious secretarial career before setting her sights on Canada. She immigrated to Montreal in 1971 where she married, raised a family, and had a long, fulfilling career at Canadian National Railway.
Predeceased by her husband, Patrick Assanah, she was a loving wife for 50 years. She is survived by her sister Ula Joseph, her brother Cyril Layne, daughters Tamara, Candace, and Anik, and grandsons Christopher Perkins, August Assanah, and Raphaël and Nicola Dupré.
Brilliantly creative and a nature lover she loved sewing, caring for birds, and tending to her garden and her many plants. She was also proudly affiliated with the Guyana Cultural Association of Montreal.
Visitation and funeral service to be held at Urgel Bourgie/Athos at 8145 Chambly Rd, Saint-Hubert (South of autoroute 30, at exit 73). Visitation on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023, from 7pm to 9pm, and on Thursday April 6th 2023, as of 10am. Funeral service to follow at 11:00 am, in the chapel of the complex.
In lieu of flowers donations to St-Mary’s Hospital or to Sakura House c/o the Victorian Order of Nurses-Oxford.
