Christos Anastassopoulos
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Christos Anastasopoulos, aged 85.
Until the very end, Christos, lived his life to the fullest and on his own terms, taking pleasure in simple things that brought him joy. He spent his last moments with his family by his side, and passed away peacefully.
Born and raised in Kefalovrisos (Halvatsos), Messinia, Greece to the late Ioannis and Ioulia Anastasopoulos, he was the middle child of three brothers. Christos emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada in November 1961, working tirelessly to adapt to this new land and thrive in this new life.
Two years later, he met and married his beloved wife, Apostolia. While raising their family, they continually strived to ensure that the hardships they had endured would not continue for the next generation. He was a tenacious man of integrity who provided for his family and instilled in them the value of being independent and self-sufficient.
Christos enjoyed starting his day having early morning coffees with his late, cherished, younger brother Foti, his late brother-in-laws Asimakis and Peter, as well as his surviving brother-in-law Adonis. It is a testament to his belief that family comes first, even as early as daybreak.
Christos relished the simple moments that make life a happy journey, including spending afternoons watching the world go by from a balcony on St. Urbain Street, taking drives in the country during harvest season, picking tomatoes and horta, playing cards, and cooking bountiful Christmas dinners. During summers, he keenly looked forward to Sunday mornings when he planned to spend the entire day barbequing and picnicking at a park with extended family and friends. Memories that are cherished by all who participated.
A big part of Christos’ heart had stayed in his beloved village in Greece where he yearned to one day return. He cherished the rhythms of a life in a rural setting, being surrounded by his family and friends, having coffee, drinks, mezes, hunting, and being present in the peace and tranquility the surrounding mountains provided.
Christos is survived by his wife of 59 years, Apostolia (nee Droukas), his children Julie (Denis Couillard de Lespinay), John (Demetra Manolis), Georgia (Frank Galiatsatos), his older brother George (Eugenia), his brother-in-law Antonis Droukas (Katina), sister-in-laws Sotiria Droukas and Vasso Anastasopoulos, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends both in Canada and in Greece. His grandchildren Louis, Nicolas, Sophie and Lucas Couillard de Lespinay; Anastasia and Christos Anastasopoulos; Theodore and Christos Galiatsatos were his crowning glory and treasures kept close to his heart.
The family will celebrate Christos’ life on Sunday March 12, 2023 at Urgel Bourgie Athos (1255 avenue Beaumont, Mont-Royal, Quebec) at 5:00 pm. A Religious Ceremony will take place at St. Irene and St. Markella Greek Orthodox Church (5390 rue St. Urbain, Montreal, Quebec) on Monday March 13, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
