Evangelos Mourelatos
Evangelos Mourelatos, age 93, passed away peacefully following an incredible fight against cancer on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022, at Mount-Sinai Hospital in Montreal. He was born on February 2nd, 1929 in Kefalonia, Greece, where he grew up, served in the army and fought to defend his country and the allied forces in the Second World War.
A fighter through and through, he had an unbeatable will to live, having overcome hardships and illnesses alike throughout his lifetime. He immigrated to Canada in 1954, he got married, helped countless families immigrate to Canada in search of a better life and worked tirelessly to build a future for himself and his family; he was entrepreneurial, clever and had a knack for numbers and quick calculations.
Despite the challenges he faced, he remained kind, loving, and incredibly funny; he loved to share stories and make others laugh. He had the ability to bring a smile to everyone’s face and touch the heart of all who knew him.
Evangelos was an extraordinary cook, with a passion for food, he loved to eat and share the meals that he prepared with everyone he loved. He would often call and say: “Guess what I just made!” with a mischievous tone, excited at the mere idea of sharing his most recent creation and convincing his listener to come pick up a portion or two.
When on vacation, he loved to bask in the hot sun and swim… such a strong swimmer, he used to hold his breath and dive to extreme depths, breaking the water holding a pebble to prove that he had successfully reached the bottom; one of his greatest achievements was having taught countless people how to swim.
His greatest pride and joy were his nine grand-children and eight great-grand-children whom he loved with all his heart and strived to provide with advice and words of wisdom.
The day the angels gave Evangelos his wings, we lost a great man and all who loved him lost a piece of their hearts.
Evangelos is survived by his wife, Athina Mourelatos, his children Eftyhia, Diamantina, Gerasimos and Vasilios as well as his grand-children and great-grand-children. He will be sorely missed and his memory eternally carved within their hearts.
A viewing will be held at Urgel Bourgie, 1255 Beaumont, Mount-Royal, QC, H3P 3J1, on Monday, November 14th, 2022, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Funeral service to be held at Koimisis Tis Theotokou Church at 11:00am on Tuesday, November 15th, 2022.
