Mabel Shaw

Mable Shaw was born on June 17, 1934 in McKoy, Clarendon. Which is located in the beautiful island of Jamaica. Her parents Pastor Daniel and Mary Shaw raised her and her 7 siblings (Esmine, Cecile, Albert, Josephine, Inez, Israel and Sammy) in Aeon town, Clarendon.

As a teenager, she moved to the city, Kingston, to live with her sister Esmine to learn “dressmaking”. While taking a walk in Emancipation Park she met Roy Anderson. They married and had eight children, Sonia, Veronica, Evelyn, Beverly, Pauline, Dudley, Peter and Sharon. After marrying Roy, Mable and her family moved to Yallahas, St. Thomas. As a mother, she raised her children to be respectful members of the community and to love, and honour God.

In the early 1970’s, Mablel and her family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As her eight children began to acclimate to a new country and language, Mable began to look for job opportunities.

She applied and received a job within the Allied Jewish Community at the Golden Age Association which is now known as the Cummings Center, where she started as a cook. As haute cuisine was not her natural talent, she dedicated herself to learning the delicacies of Jewish cuisine and immersed herself by studying many cookbooks and attending cooking workshops. As a bonafide Jamaican she shared Jamaican cuisine with the staff and diners who looked forward to her Jamaican cooking on a weekly basis. She worked her way up to being the head cook. For her retirement in 2008, she was invited to a ceremony in her honour with the placing of a commemorative plaque on the wall for her long years of dedicated service to the agency.

She loved her job immensely and her true passion was Christ, and serving others. She was an active member of the O’Brien Church of God where she met many devoted friends, affectionately known as brothers and sisters in Christ. Throughout her life, Mable rises to every challenge and confronts every situation with prayer and praise to God. She enthusiastically raised her grandchildren to also love and reverent God.

She passed away leaving behind 4 siblings, 8 children; 11 nieces; 11 nephews,19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and family pets. Our wish is to honour her by making donations to the O’Brien Church of God at [email protected].
