Carol Woods

On the afternoon of July 17th, 2022, Carol passed away at 1:20 pm, surrounded by her loving family at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. Her passing came after a 22 year battle against breast cancer, including an astonishing 4 years with metastasized stage four cancer. She faced this battle with incredible courage and grace, until the very end.

Carol was born in Quebec City, Quebec, on June 23rd, 1944. She was the fourth child to Madeleine Woods (née Jacques) and John James Woods, whom she loved dearly.

Carol lived a very full and wonderful life.

Her family was what she held dearest. She married the love of her life on September 28th, 1968. She and Barry remained faithfully married for 53 beautiful years, and had two daughters, Tracy and Kelly.

She loved nature and wildlife, with hikes, walks, and kayaking being among her favourite ways to enjoy it.

She was a wonderful artist, and loved drawing, oil painting, and photography. She worked at these hobbies with passion and dedication. She loved music, a passion she shared with her grandson Corey, who grew into a talented musician, much to her delight.

Carol had a passion for learning and took university classes throughout her life, even as her sickness progressed, loving art, history and Italian language.

In her life, she travelled with her husband to France, Italy, Holland, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Barbados, Mexico, China, Morocco, and all over the U.S. They celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary by having dinner at the Louvre in Paris.

Carol had a very kind and generous spirit, always helping others when she could. She assisted a Syrian refugee family integrate over the course of almost two years, going above and beyond to help them start a new life in the country she loved so much. Just months before her passing, she collected donations of baby supplies to send to Ukraine, before and after chemotherapy treatments.

In 2017, after being declared cancer-free after a second bout with the disease, she decided to celebrate her health by organizing a fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in which she kayaked 52 km, from Newport, Vermont to Magog, Quebec, over the course of three days and raising over three thousand dollars.

Carol was preceded in death by a stillborn granddaughter, Alya, an event which saddened her deeply. She is survived by her loving and doting husband Barry, daughters Tracy and Kelly, sons-in-law Gustav and Oussama, grandchildren Corey (who shared a birthday and kindred spirit with his Nana), Sara, and Kenza, brothers Michael and Terrence, and sisters Patricia and Judith, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Illescas, Dr. Meterissian and Dr. Bouganim for giving Carol the best possible life for as long as they could, and a special thank you to MUHC ICU nurses Odu, who gave her the gift of laughs and utmost dignity in her final hours, and Lena, who ensured a peaceful passing.

Her daughters would like to thank their father who worked tirelessly to not only give her a beautiful life, but also to care for her in her final, extremely difficult months, giving her the gift of the comfort of home and dignity until the very end.

Carol supported many charities, and so in lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would please her very much.

The family will receive condolences at the Urgel Bourgie / Athos - Cimetière jardin & Complexe funéraire de St-Hubert, 8145 Chemin Chambly, St-Hubert, J3Y 5K2, on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., as well as Wednesday, July 27, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A service will follow at 1 p.m., followed by a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
