Carroll L'Italien
With deep sadness the family announces the passing of Mr Carroll L'Italien, who died suddenly on June 30, 2022 at the age of 78. He was the son of the late Mr. Léopold Litalien and Mrs. Fernande Allard. He will be missed by his beloved wife Claire Trottier, his two children Charles (Eve-Marie Surprenant) and Catherine (Steven Lapointe) as well as his six grandchildren Béatrice, Victoria, Charlotte, Alice, Juliette and Henri, his brothers and sisters, Yvon (Céline Proulx), Johanne, Daniel (Evelyne Nadeau) and Marie-Claire (Marc Labrecque) and several nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.
Born in New Brunswick in 1943, he graduated from the Faculté d’administration de l’Université de Sherbrooke (1965). Great defender of the "reasoned negotiation" approach, he began his career in the public service where, among other things, he held the role of spokesperson for the Government of Quebec and the School Boards Federation in the negotiations with all Quebec teachers. In 1982, he made the jump to the private sector. He successively held the positions of director of industrial relations for the Société d’Électrolyse et de Chimie Alcan Ltd. (SECAL) (1982-1988), Vice-President Human Resources for British Alcan PLC (1988-1992), Vice-President Human Resources and Organizational Development at Bombardier Inc (1992-1996), President and CEO of SECAL (1996-1999), and Senior Vice-President at Bombardier Inc (1999-2007). He had a significant impact on the world of labor relations here and elsewhere with the concept of operational stability that he implemented in Alcan facilities. Recognized by his peers for his innovative spirit in labor relations, his contributions earned him an honorary doctorate from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi in 2001.
As a committed citizen, he also distinguished himself through his actions in many causes, including Centraide (Cercle des grands donateurs), CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, Université de Sherbrooke (major ambassador), Tablée des Chefs, Bon Dieu dans la rue (now known as Dans la rue), and Alex Kovalev and his Friends Foundation for kids. He will be remembered as a man inhabited by great humanism and Christian values, for whom hard work, honesty, integrity, respect for others and generosity were the foundation of his life.
