Catherine Kargas
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine Kargas, aged 55, on October 9th, 2021. She was an incredible and loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was an extremely hardworking woman who raised her daughter to the absolute best of her abilities and watched her turn into a respectful, caring and perseverant adult.
Catherine was known and loved in all corners of the world for her passion and dedication to making this world a better place for our children and grandchildren. Her early work in energy efficiency brought her to embrace advanced and clean mobility as a means to reduce greenhouse gases and make this world a better place. She served in several organizations in Canada and in Europe. She was Electric Mobility Canada’s former CEO and Chair and served on the board of that organization for over a decade and she was bestowed the Al Cormier Life Achievement Award for her tireless commitment to the cause. In fact, much of the current changes in government policies regarding electrification of transportation in Canada were initiated by her several years ago. In a broader arena, she was recognized twice as one of the 10 most influential minds in mobility worldwide for her relentless commitment and for her visionary influence on mobility in general, but to Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) in particular. Her sharp and creative mind will be sorely missed by “a whole MaaS community that will be missing Catherine, across the globe” as her friends from Finland remarked recently. The world has indeed lost one of its brightest minds. Her friends at MARCON where she worked 32 years will remember her forever as the warm and caring friend as well as a tireless and industrious co-worker. MARCON could not have been the same without her.
Travelling was another one of her greatest passions. She travelled to many places across the world, but nothing made her happier than travelling to Greece with her family. Although she was fiercely Canadian, her love for her native Greece, was unsurpassed Her dream was to one day move back to Greece with her family and live in her homeland for the rest of her days. Religion was also a great part of her life. She was very committed to her God and to Christian Orthodoxy. Several churches in Montreal (CA), Chios (GR) and Athens (GR) benefited from her generosity. She established the first church dedicated to Saint Parthenios in the world, located in Athens. Saint Parthenios is the patron saint of cancer patients. The creation of this church bridged her passion and love for Christ and Greece with her cancer diagnosis. She put up the strongest and most courageous fight against stage 4 breast cancer for 5 entire years. Despite her diagnosis, not only did she persevere through a multitude of treatments and clinical trials, but she always maintained a positive and optimistic outlook on life in order to stay strong for her family. Though she is greatly missed, she is now free from the pain and suffering of this terrible disease, finally at peace.
Catherine was surrounded by much love and support throughout her life, her brave 5-year battle against cancer, and her last days. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but will forever be remembered as the incredibly strong and loving woman that she was.
The viewing will be held on Wednesday October 13th 2021 at Urgel Bourgie, 1255 Av. Beaumont, Mont-Royal, QC H3P 3J1, from 5-9 pm.
The funeral will be held on Thursday October 14th 2021 at Koimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 7700 Av, de l’Épée, Montreal, QC, H3N 2E6, at 11 am.
