Maureen Burns

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother Maureen Rankin at the age of 91.

She leaves to mourn our father and her husband Robert Rankin, her children Deborah, Brian (Charlene), Gary, Michael (Kelly), and Lynn (Sam), her grandchildren Shaun (Shiri), Cheryl (Chris), Laura (Joe), Kyle, Conor, Shane, Katie, Carolyn (Kyle), and Andrew, her great-grandchildren Kaleb, Declan, Theos, Aliyah, and Amelia-Lyna, and her sister Brenda Arthur (Kippy).
She is predeceased by her sisters Sheila Richard (Gibby) and Una Gendron (Gerry), and her brothers-in-law. She will be sorely missed by her family, relatives, and friends in Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and elsewhere. Mom had an unfailing devotion and love for her family, pets, community, and Church. She was a vibrant woman and knowledge-seeker who remained intellectually engaged to the end. As the family Matriarch and as a woman of great faith and spirituality, she kept a close watch on us all. She never lost sight of her moral compass despite changing mores. She remained active and engaged trying to keep her mind and body strong. She maintained her exercise routine, and was a voracious reader with a keen interest in current affairs. She always kept her iPad nearby. It was a source of great joy allowing her to read articles and listen to podcasts. She overcame many obstacles in her life, always with resilience and grace. Over the years, Maureen was involved in many causes, most notably the Anglophone rights movement of the late 70’s as a member of the Positive Action Committee affiliated with Alliance Quebec. She had a passion for social justice in all things. Her sharp mind was frequently on display in her contributions to the letters-to-the-editor section of the newspaper. She retained her classic style, morality and beliefs, and kept her sense of humor intact despite the challenges that life presented. Our mother was a great inspiration to all who crossed her path.

A private funeral Mass and virtual service will be announced at a later date. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Urgel Bourgie (Lasalle).
