Luigi De Cicco

Luigi, affectionately known as Gigino, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side at the age of 89, after a courageous and quiet battle with cancer.

Gigino leaves in mourning his beloved wife Rosa of 60 years, as well as his children Maria (Tony), Trisha (Fino) and Mimmo (Nataly). He will also be fondly remembered by his adoring grandchildren: Christopher, Kevin, Kymberly, Beverly, Brandon, Kayla-Rose and Alessandro. Gigino was loving, dedicated, caring, kind and generous to everyone he met. His shy smile, mild mannerisms and huge heart will be missed by neighbours, friends and family including his younger brother, sisters, in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins in both Montreal and in Italy.

Luigi was born in Italy but in 1953 left his family and sweetheart in the hopes of making a better life in Canada. Together with his younger brother Tony, he boarded the ship Saturnia heading for Halifax. He then took a train to Montreal and from then on called it home. In 1959, he called over his sweetheart Rosa and they were married on June 24th 1959. Together, they made countless sacrifices and gave up a lot to make sure that their children would be given every opportunity to enjoy a better life and realize their dreams.

Gigino was a hard worker, a handy man, and a jack of all trades. Of all his many jobs, he loved working the most with cars!

After retiring, he was active for many years on the Executive Board of the Club d’Âge d’Or Italien d’Anjou, he was active in his parish, he spent time volunteering to drive friends to their medical appointments and always made it a point to visit friends and family in the hospital or seniors residences with a plate of Rosa home cooked delicacies. He was proud of his Italian heritage. Gigino loved nothing more than sharing a good meal and a glass of vino with family and friends. He delighted in making wine and cured meats with the various cugini, took pride in tending to the vegetable garden and had so much fun making gnocchi with his sweetheart. He was an avid fan of Formula 1 always sporting Ferrari as his pride and joy as well as he was a taunch supporter of the Italian national squad and Juventus! Flags, caps and t-shirts proudly displayed.

He adored his family both in Montreal and in Italy and cherished the time he spent with them. He touched the lives of many and will always be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, his willingness to help, his endless kindness and generosity, his witty sense of humour, and his ability to entertain us with his stories. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors and the staff of the Royal Victoria hospital for their exceptional care and compassion given to Luigi.

In memory of Luigi, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
