Madeline Gleason
Madeline Gleason, born Dec 31, 1925, passed away peacefully the evening of Friday July 22, 2022, at the age of 96 years old.
Madeline grew up in Griffintown with her mother and father, who ran the famous “Horse Palace”, and her 3 sisters and 2 brothers. She never married and had no children. However, she has 20+ nieces and nephews, 20+ grandnieces and grandnephews and several great grandnieces and great grandnephews.
Madeline entered the convent on a few occasions but found that it was not the life for her. Afterwards she worked at several different jobs but found her calling as a babysitter for many of her nieces and nephews. Many of them have fond memories of her taking them all over Montreal, by bus, visiting family and friends, especially to St Joseph’s Oratory. later she babysat for a famous person’s children, and for others, often travelling to Florida with their families.
Anyone who met Madeline knew that she a was a kind, religious and generous person. She was living in a senior residence until 2007 when she had a fall and eventually was living at a long-term care facility, “Pavillon LaSalle”, where she was well cared for over the last 5 years.
It was there that she had the reputation as a “constant talker”. There would be 4 family members visiting her, but not one could get a word in edgewise, but she must have been listening at the same time because she always seemed to be up to date with family matters. At times she would burst out signing old “Irish” songs, for all within earshot to hear, whenever the mood hit her.
We will miss her dearly. A mass will be held in her memory at St Gabriel’s Church in Saint-Hubert.
