Irénée Beaubien S.J.

Born in 1916 in Shawinigan, Fr. Irénée Beaubien passed away at the Jesuit Infirmary, in Richelieu, Quebec, on May 15, 2017.
He had entered the Jesuit order in 1936 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1949. He was the founder and Director of the Inquiry Forum (1952-1963), of the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism (1963-1984) and of Pathways of Faith – Sentiers de foi (1984-1995). One of Canada’s most distinguished ecumenists, he was the Chairperson of the board that supervised the Christian Pavilion at Expo ’67. He was made Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 and received a papal distinction, by Pope Benedict XVI, for his dedication to ecumenical and interreligious dialogue at the same time as Dr. Victor Goldbloom (2012).

He is survived by his sister Cécile, his brothers Léo, Bernard (Alice) and Jacques (Joyce), his nephews, nieces and cousins. He will be missed by his Jesuit companions, by the members of the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism and, more broadly, by all those who are active in the ecumenical field in Canada.

Fr. Beaubien’s funeral services will be held at L’église du Gesù, 1202, de Bleury, Montreal H3B 3J3.
On Friday, May 26, 7 PM to 9 PM, including an ecumenical prayer;
on Saturday, May 27, 10 AM, Funeral Mass.
