Raymond Barakett

Peacefully passed away on January 3, 2015 at the age of 83.

He will be fondly remembered by his wife, June (Okamoto), his sister Hélène (Basile Alepin), his many nephews and nieces and Bevan Reilly, June’s nephew. Raymond was the son of Alexandre and Nahila (Salum) and predeceased by sisters and brothers Lilly (George Boumansour), Violet (Fred Lutfy), Evelyn, Lydia, Ramsay (Harlene Svoronos) and Henry.

Raymond grew up in Trois-Rivières where his family had ultimately settled following their immigration to Canada from Lebanon in the early 1900s. He went on to specialize in the shoe retailing business, successfully opening a number of stores, including FX LaSalle and Naturalizer, and becoming a well-respected member of Montreal's footwear industry.

Raymond met his wife June, a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines, when he mistakenly boarded a flight headed for New York instead of his intended destination of Miami. There began a happy and loving relationship of 47 years.

He was an avid golfer, member of several Montreal area golf clubs where he had also enjoyed an active social life.

Throughout his life, Raymond was known for his keen interest in his own family, his generosity, his sincere friendship, warm sense of humour and keeping well informed on business developments and current affairs.

During his long illness, Raymond received the support of family, friends and caregivers and on his behalf June and his family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation.

A special word of gratitude to Dr. Guy Pelletier for his steadfast care and support.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 14 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 1020 Laird Bd., Town of Mount Royal, H3R 2G9.

The family will welcome family and friends to express their condolences at 10AM. The service will follow at 11AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation or the Cedars Cancer Institute.
