Johanna Geertruida Egyed (née Den Haring)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Johanna Egyed (née Den Haring) at the age of 92 years on November 9th, 2025. She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, John Egyed. Johanna will be terribly missed by her son Peter (Blanka Koll) and daughter Marika (Barry Jessiman), her grandchildren Elisa (Sam), Callan, Talia (Valentin) and Jacob for whom she was a loving and wonderful Oma, and by extended family and dear friends.
Born in the Netherlands, the eldest daughter in a family of seven children, Johanna’s childhood in Rotterdam was shaped by both a loving family and the harsh realities of World War II. At 21 years old she came to Canada, making Montreal her lifelong home. Johanna enjoyed working at Holt Renfrew, and in 1960 she married John, a refugee of the Hungarian revolution, and they had two children. She enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom until her children were teenagers, then worked for 13 years at the RBC International Centre, a career she valued and where she made close friends. Johanna had many passions, including reading, knitting, cooking and classical music, and family and friends were always welcome around her table in Ville St. Laurent. With an easy sense of humour, she remained sharp-minded, inquisitive and well-informed her whole life and was a great conversationalist and storyteller. Johanna and John travelled often in Canada, the U.S. and Europe to visit dear family and friends and spent many happy holidays by the sea with their children, grandchildren and extended family. Through sheer determination and smarts, she stayed in her beloved home until 11 days before her passing.
Johanna’s family thanks her caregivers (especially Mathie, Lucie and Lena) who helped her to remain in her home in later years, her CLSC home care nurses, and the staff of St. Raphael Palliative Care Home for their exceptional care and kindness in her final days. The family will receive condolences at Urgel Bourgie (3955 Côte-de-Liesse) January 10 at 12:30 pm, with a memorial service at 2 pm. Those interested are invited to make a donation to St. Raphael Palliative Care Home in Johanna’s honour (maisonstraphael.org).
