Marika Asimakopulos (nee Salamis)
June 13, 1939 to August 12, 2011
Marika Asimakopulos passed away Friday morning, peacefully, at home, after a long battle with multiple myeloma.
Marika was born in Toronto on June 13, 1939, to Reverend Nicholas Salamis and Efrosini Vergou. The family moved to Montreal in 1945.
She studied at McGill University, earning a BA and then a High School Teachers Diploma in 1961, the same year she married Tom (Athanasios) Asimakopulos. He was a Professor of Economics at McGill University, until his death in 1990.
Marika taught at the High School for Girls, until she had her daughter Anna. She stayed at home to raise Anna and Julia, but still found time to pursue her lifelong interest in science, earning a BSc in Biology, and working for many years as a biology lab demonstrator at Concordia and McGill. Later, she combined science and teaching, earning a Masters in Library Science, and working as a reference librarian at McGill University’s Schulich Library of Science and Engineering. Marika was so passionate about helping students that she continued to work despite her deteriorating health.
In 2006, she was co-chair, along with Mayor Gérald Tremblay, of the 100-year anniversary celebrations of the Hellenic Community in Montreal.
Marika is pre-deceased by her husband Tom and her brother Constantine. She is survived by her daughters Anna (Preston) and Julia (Line), her beloved grandchildren Clara and Nicholas, her sisters-in-law Vasiliki, Evelyn (Mike), Corinne, and her brother-in-law Nicholas.
