Jacqueline Selman

Jacqueline Juanita Selman, affectionately known as Nita or Jackie, passed away on 20 April 2022 at the age of 86 in the comfort of her home in LaSalle, Quebec. The eldest child of Eldica Elizabeth Selman (neé Phillips) and Joshua Richardson Selman, she was born on 17 June 1935 in Jericho, St-George, Barbados.

Part of the wave of Caribbean migrants to Canada in the 1960’s, she worked hard for more than 40 years before her retirement. On 28 August 1993, at the ripe age of 58, Jacqueline married Richard James Pottier at St-Clement’s church in Verdun, Quebec. Together they spent almost 25 happy years as each other’s confidant and learning about and embracing the other’s culture.

Jacqueline was a God-fearing, selfless woman who lived for her family. A lover of milkshakes and garden-fresh vegetables, she was known for her cackle of a laugh and short sharp Barbadian sayings, which her grandchildren struggled to understand but nevertheless found hilarious. An avid Montreal Canadiens fan, she also enjoyed the television show Miami Vice, going to the cinema and taking short road-trips with her church. A fine cook, she made the most delectable fried chicken, and she enjoyed sitting on the terrace chatting with friends and family.

She was predeceased by her husband Richard and brother Anderson DeCourcy Selman. She is survived by her daughter Miriam Eudeen Selman, son and daughter-in-law MacDonald Julian Selman and Barbara Dennis Selman, her five grandchildren: Wayne O’Neal Selman, Junior Nathaniel Hull, Julia Elysa Selman Ayetey, Edward Nathaniel Hull, Lynkahn-Ashley Sutton, and their spouses, and 14 great-grandchildren spanning the ages of 25 years to 6 months, as well as five siblings: Clement, Benjamin, Andrew, Joseph, and Lolita. She will be greatly missed by her many other relatives and loved ones including her cousin Horrison Gittens and her cherished stepchildren Brian, Katherine, Loraine, Kenneth and Don.

Jacqueline was the epitome of Philippians 2:3-4: “…Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Jacqueline loved, and was loved, beyond measure. May she rest in perfect peace.
