Jean (Johnny) Roberge

Passed away on May 29, 2021 at the Ste Anne Veterans Hospital. He was 95 years of age.

He was predeceased by his father Antoine Roberge, his mother Lucie Gagné, his brothers Claude and Mack and his sister Lucette. He leaves to mourn his sisters Marcelle and Pierrette and his brother Maurice, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Johnny grew up in Dalhousie, N.B. and from a very young age he was an avid outdoor sportsman; he loved hunting and fishing. He always had hobbies such as card, coin and stamp collecting which he kept up for most of his life. He was a passionate hockey enthusiast.

He enlisted in the navy in June of 1943, and served 23 months in the North Atlantic on the Levis Frigate as well as the Bittersweet Corvette that escorted the Maritime Convoys in Europe. He returned home in 1945 at the end of the war. He received the Atlantic Star, the 1939-1945 Star, the War Medal of 1939-1945, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal.

In 1955 he moved to Baie Comeau, QC where he worked as a papermaker for the North Shore Paper Company. He transferred from the Dalhousie NB Legion to the Baie Comeau Legion and was an executive committee member in the 60’s and 70’s. He worked hard as a Legionnaire and was always on deck when it came to Poppy Season. On Sunday, October 25th 2020, he became the first member of the Baie Comeau North Shore Legion to reach the 75 years of service mark. In 2011 he received the Lieutenant Governor Senior Medal in recognition of his support for the Mission of the Legion.

He was a proud Veteran and very proud to have fought for the Freedom of Canada. Johnny will be missed by all.

A religious service will be held in his honor on June 15th 2021 at 4:00. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:00 at
Urgel Bourgie Funeral Home; 1750 rue Notre Dame, Lachine, QC.
