It is with heavy hearts that the family of Antonietta Trimarchi Saitta, known to everyone as Mela, announces her peaceful passing on June 1, 2026, at the age of 90.
Born in Santa Teresa di Riva, in the province of Messina, Italy, on August 20, 1935, Mela came to Canada in 1951 as a young girl and made her home in Montreal, Quebec. A seamstress all her life, she had a true gift with a needle and thread. There was almost nothing she could not make or mend, and she brought to her craft a skill and care that few could match. But her greatest work was always her family.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Mela loved the way the women of her Sicilian generation loved: not with grand speeches, but with a warm kitchen, a full table, and a pot that always had room for one more. To feed someone was, for her, the same as loving them, and she fed everyone. Her love reached across four generations, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Nicola Saitta; her parents, Giuseppe and Sebastiana Trimarchi; and her dear brothers, Pietro and Angelo.
She leaves to mourn her daughters, Agatina Saitta (Remi) and Anna Maria Lombardo (Onofrio); her sister Maria (Franco) and her brother Franco (Vittoria), and their families; her cherished grandchildren, George, Nicholas, Stella, Stefano, Paolo, and Andrea, and their families; her great-grandchildren, Alexander, Lily-Rose, Thomas, Elias, Zoey, Edith, Logan, Alessio, Giuliana, Olivia, Adam, Poppy, and London; and her great-great-grandchildren, Jackson, Myles, Melody, and Freya-Rose. She will also be lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews, and by all the family she so dearly loved.
The family will receive condolences Friday June 5th 2026 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm at the Urgel Bourgie Funeral Complex, 6700 rue Beaubien Est, Montréal.
The funeral will be held Tuesday June 9th 2026 starting at 11:30 am at the Notre-Dame-de-Pompéi Catholic Church, 2875 rue Sauvé Est, Montreal. The entombment will follow starting at 2:15 pm at the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, 4601 Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Antonietta’s memory may be made to the Breakfast Club of Canada (www.breakfastclubcanada.org/donate). For three years, she volunteered at a school in Rivière-des-Prairies, cooking and serving breakfast to children each morning. It was the truest expression of who she was: for Nonna, feeding a child was simply how you loved them, and she gave that love to every child she met.
Riposa in pace, cara Mela. Ti vogliamo tanto bene e vivrai per sempre nei nostri cuori.
Rest in peace, dear Mela. We love you so much, and you will live forever in our hearts.
